And on the other end of the line was the dearest little old lady.
"Hello, is this Sarah Vorx?" (Yes that is how most people attempt to pronounce my name). She asks ever so politely. And that is pretty much how the conversation went. I have a feeling it kind of made her night. Also I have the pleasure of knowing some old lady out there thinks I have super awesome handwriting! Win!
"Uh, Yes this is Sarah" I reply cautiously.
"Oh good I'm glad I've reached you." I can hear her smile through the phone.
"Oh right" Still not overly convinced I am speaking with a sane person.
"You see, I have a letter here that is addressed to Miss Clare Butler and Miss Sarah Young but they don't live here - I live here and I have done for a long time so I think you've sent it to the wrong address dear."
A light comes on and suddenly what she is talking about makes sense. I've sent an invite to her by mistake. "Oh no! I think I have sent it to the wrong address I'm so sorry!"
"Oh dear that's alright, I just think your letter is just so beautifully written, I'm a bit of a perfectionist you see and you just don't see envelopes with such beautifully addressed names on them nowadays." I can tell she is impressed and I don't have the heart to tell her I've actually printed it on my computer - if she wants to believe I have the neatest handwriting of all time, I'm not going to stop her.
"Thank you for that!"
"That's alright dear - I looked at your name and tried to find you in the phone book but you weren't there-"
"Oh yes that's because we've only just moved into our house"
"And so I looked in the phone book for the other names and I found them and they gave me your number so I thought I'd give you a call." To be honest if I were her I would've just opened it - much easier way to get the details of the spaz who obviously doesn't know how to send a letter properly.
"I really appreciate you letting me know." I say, not really sure what else I should say, it is very nice of her to let me know instead of just throwing it in the bin.
"Now where would you like me to send it? Do you know their proper address?" Uh, the answer would be no - because obviously I haven't sent it to the right address the first time round.
"What if you just put an arrow to return to sender? That way I'll get it and then I can work out where to send it." I suggest.
"Yes that probably sounds best. We'll I'm sorry I've got to put my handwriting on your beautiful envelope but that way they'll know to send it back to you."
"OK great. Thank you very much for doing this!"
"Well I thought if you'd put so much effort into the writing that it must be for something important - is it for an Engagement party or something?" Yes - uh so much effort into organising a mail-merge. Whoops.
"Yep, that's what it's for actually!"
"Oh lovely, well I'm glad then. I'll send this back." She laughs.
"Thank you"
"You're very welcome"
"You enjoy the rest of your night." I smile and I hope she can hear it in my voice.
"You too! Goodnight"
That is really sweet. What a dear Elderly lady. where did you get the address Sarah?
